Nancy Hayward Makes an IRA Gift in Gratitude to Orbis and Others Who Give the Gift of Sight

Photo of Nancy HaywardMs. Nancy Hayward is a woman who believes in women taking care of themselves financially. She’s a member of Orbis’s Visionary Club—those who have told Orbis that they’ve named Orbis in their estate plans. Nancy has named Orbis as the beneficiary of an IRA.

She’s also the daughter of parents who grew up in the Depression and passed their ability to monitor their finances down to their children.

“Being frugal was part of my education,” she says.

Nancy had a long career as an educator, teaching first grade for 16 years and then getting certified in library science and teaching library classes and research techniques to grades K through 6. She loves to read and has traveled extensively, having been to 27 countries on four continents. She also enjoys theater. She went to New York City to see four Broadway plays in one trip! Then she loves to return to her home on a 26-mile-long greenway along the Boise River in Garden City, next to Boise, Idaho.

Her first marriage reinforced her parents’ lessons about financial independence for women. She’s been married to her current husband, a college professor, for 36 years—but she is not relying on him to manage her estate planning.

“My husband made enough money to take care of his family,” she says. “So I’m using my estate to take care of what I find important, which is to take care of the less enfranchised. It makes it much more difficult to learn in school or do your job if you can’t see well. I’m basically interested in the care of human beings. My giving is people-oriented.”

She has prepared her own will, naming her favorite charities.

“Women need to be financially aware. They need to plan ahead,” she says. “In my case, the man in the family takes care of his financial needs, and I take care of mine. I am taking care of my interests.”

She adds, “I can’t imagine that all the things I’ve seen and experiences I’ve had would have been possible if I hadn’t had my sight. I have glaucoma, and I’m at the eye doctor’s frequently. The world has so much to offer. Therefore I’m grateful for my vision, and I support those who give the gift of sight.”

You, too, can become a Visionary Club member by naming Orbis in your estate plan. You’ll create a legacy of helping others who currently have no access to the eye care and medicines that prevent blindness. Contact us with any questions you may have.
